1.  What is your name and grade?

My name is Cecelia Lawrence and I am in 9th grade.

2. When were you officially chosen as Student of the Month?

A week ago. (this would be sept. 7)

3. How do you feel about being Student of the Month?

I felt very honored, and very happy earning this title.

4. What are the benefits, if any, of being Student of the Month?

I get respect from my teachers. People look at me with respect.

5. What are some things you did that you think made you Student of the Month?

I was very kind to students and had a good attitude, was hardworking and I participated in 
photography, yoga, and dance class. 

6. What were you thinking when you heard or saw yourself labeled as Student of the Month?

I thought I was a good fit for Student of the Month.

7.  What does achieving Student of the Month mean for you?

"Achieving Student of the month meant that all my hard work paid off." Work being homework and school assignments

8. How will this title affect your life?

"I can tell my children that I was famous in school."

9. What do you think it took to earn that title? (toil, time, was it effortless)

It took Cecelia hours of hardwork and a good attitude towards other students and teachers.

10. How does your parent feel about you earning this title?

Cecelia's parents were proud, and very happy.
"We went to an Italian place: Mandola's, we go their every time [something is achieved]."

11.  How difficult is it earning the title?

Cecelia said one of the difficulties she faced were lack of sleep. " I slept late; around midnight to 1:00am."

12. How did relatives, and other relationships affect your progress of becoming Student of the Month?

My family supported me and motivated me for this title.

13. Who was your biggest motivator in helping you gain Student of the Month?

My Aunt.

14. What did that motivator say or do that affected you?

She [aunt] told me "Don't doubt yourself!"

15. Why or why not are you considering becoming Student of the Month next month?

Cecelia will not try to become Student of the Month next month ."I feel like everyone should have a chance to be Student of the Month."

16: What concerns do you have, if any, about being Student of the Month?

I think people will think that I am a tryhard. I have been considered a tryhard when I turned in assignments on time.

17: What are the reasons why you wanted to achieve the Student of the Month title?

"I initially wanted to achieve Student of the Month because it's a good title."

18. What other achievements are you going to try to achieve?

My next goals are to get all A's on her grades and to be nicer to her sister.

19. What are some tips or advice for people who want to become Student of the Month?

"Focus on your schoolwork and have a good attitude."

1. What was your reaction when you found out your daughter was the Student of the Month?

I was proud of Cecelia and and we decided to celebrate on her becoming Student of the Month.

2. Where did you and your family go to celebrate? 

We went to Mandola's, it's Cecelia's favorite place to eat and we like to go there every time Cecelia gets good grades.

3. What do you expect your daughter should do now?

I think my daughter should be more involved in competitions. Now that I know she can accomplish big challenges, I think she should be involved in other, major competitions. That would make me really proud if she got some medals.

English Teacher John Doe:

1. You were one of the teachers who voted Cecelia as Student of the Month. Why did you decide Cecelia was a good candidate?
Cecelia did very good on her grades, she participated in many school activities, and she seemed to be willing to work hard in order to get what she wanted. I knew these traits were going to make Cecelia a great person to compete in this title. I see I was correct.

2. How can Cecelia impact the school as Student of the Month?
As Student of the Month, she becomes an inspiring student role model for students who failing or who are troublemakers. She represents who we want students in our school to act an be like. She represents the school's reputation.
3. Why did the school board pick Cecelia as Student of the Month?
Cecelia was picked as Student of the Month because she showed all A's in her studies and academic integrity. She also participated in other extracurricular activities, such as dance and yoga. She displayed a good attitude towards others despite having all these activities and she successfully shown that students can avert stress build up.
4: Would you like to add anything else?
I am proud that we as a school have students who strive to be the greatest, and I hope that all of our students choose to become someone like Cecelia.

Inverted Pyramid

1: 3 good leads to use are: the HOW lead, WHY lead, and WHAT lead

2: The leads above are better because they begin with the most important parts of the story. The How lead begins with the "how" of the story (the event happened by______ ) , the Why lead begins with the cause of the story (because of ___...), and the What lead begins with the fact of the story (___ happened). Other leads such as  the who, when, where leads begin with details that are not the most important, usually.

3: A Direct Quotes are what they subject exactly said. It is used to elaborate on whatever the previous paragraph's topic is.

4: Direct Quotes help elaborate/ tell the details of a topic or story.

Superintendent Putman first proposed this plan in August, but the district did not have the funding to progress this idea. The city newspaper published an article about the proposal, and the anonymous donation followed. “With the tight budget and tough economic times, I thought my Wi-Fi proposal was a pipe dream,” she said. “I want to thank the donor for being so generous.”

The quote is before the paragraph being elaborated. It describes what the people say/ think in order to support the facts displayed on the paragraph. The quote can be longer than a sentence, should have an attribute/ a noun then verb structure after the first sentence of the quote, and it shouldn't repeat the lead/ what the paragraph says. The structure should be transition, quote, then another transition if decided to add a quote from someone else.

6:  An attribution is telling who is the person who said the quote.
7: The attribute should be structured as : noun then verb.
8: Is a fact, partial quote, or indirect quote that links the paragraphs together and makes the flow of the story "fluid". 
9: Three types of transitions are: A fact, indirect quote, or partial quote.

     In response to multiple fights in school, any student caught fighting on campus must complete a TCRT non-violence workshop, in addition to normal disciplinary actions.
    “Students have to learn how to solve life’s problems without violence, and this program will teach our students just that,” said Mr. Brown.
      During the year of 2010-11, the school has reported 22 fights so far.  Last year, the school had 18 total fights.
      “One of my friends got in a fight, but he didn’t start it. He was defending himself,” Freshman Andy Opel said. “Now students will get suspended and be forced to attend this program. That’s just too much.”

1: The Defense BAE Systems gave abandoned land to honeybees in order to protect them. Part of  BAE Systems initiatives turned to protecting the environment. The company help by encouraging people to recycle, to planting milkweed around its land for monarchs. Now, the company is helping bees, allowing the bees to build hives around the company's land.

2:     140 acres were dedicated to the honeybees. The land was given by the BAE Systems, a company that builds components for missiles and other military machinery. 

3:  The TRIGR system is the Target Reconnaissance Infrared Geolocating Rangefinder. It is a laser targeting device that helps war fighters locate enemy targets on the battlefield.

4:  The bee group has at least 10 permanent hives in the BAE Systems property. Each hive yielding at least 60 pounds of honey every year. 

5: The survival of bees is important to humans because bees are pollinators. Pollinators provide 70% of people's food crop. Pollinators also spread pollen to plants, allowing fertilization to happen, which allows plants to create fruit that humans can eat. So if there are no bees, there are less pollinators, which means less food, leading to possible food shortage.

6. Yes, BAE Systems is doing a worthy journey in helping bees and other businesses should follow in aiding our environment. The more businesses that help in restoring the environment means there will be less environmental problems existing today. The journey to restoring environment will also give businesses a good reputation and possible aid in marketing if businesses majorly help in restoring environment, like what BAE Systems is doing.

Ethics In the Media

Offensive Images:
A conservative Danish daily newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, posted offensive caricatures of the prophet Muhammad with the idea that people should stop being intimidated by the Islamic fundamentalists, saying if they didn't go against European media's self-censorship, "the Islamic terrorists will have won". When there were protests, rioting, or killings, these cartoons published and became more evident to the public. Reactions to these cartoons made Western news media harder to ignore the dilemma.

Question:  Do we publish the cartoons or not?
The cartoons shouldn't be published because it creates controversy around the dilemma. If the cartoons create more conflict, it would be better if they were not published.


Who’s the “Predator”?

“To Catch a Predator,” a series on NBC’s Dateline, is a series where suspects portrayed as sexual predators that have engaged in sexually charged online chats with minors, go meet the person, and instead meet reporter Chris Hansen. The conversation are recorded, and the suspects meet law enforcement officers in the end. The recordings of these situations reach the public via the series "To Catch a Predator".

Question: If your newspaper or television station were approached by Perverted Justice [a website that identifies possible predators]  to participate in a “sting” designed to identify real and potential perverts, should you go along, or say, “No thanks”? Was NBC reporting the news or creating it?

I would say "no thanks", because this would lead to bias. The idea of catching possible predators is a great idea, but the recordings would infer that these suspects are actual predators, rather than suspects. Catching the event shows the suspects in a bad perspective, because it doesn't show the context as a whole. NBC was creating the news because it displays a dilemma and labels the situation as "justice", even though the suspect hasn't gone to court yet.




Publishing Drunk Drivers’ Photos:

Don White, publisher and editor of The Anderson News, decides the newspaper will publish photos of all of the people convicted of drunken driving in Anderson County. After learning that the battle against drunk driving "hit a brick wall", White decided to take notice of the local peoples’s call for a more innovative penalty against drunk drivers, leading to the idea of publishing local drunk drivers photos. White states that this idea will decrease the amount of drunk drivers in the area.

Question: Is this an appropriate policy for a newspaper?

No, because it violates the "invasion of privacy" idea. While this method will keep the drunk drivers away, it will also hurt the reputations of the convicted drivers. If the public notices their driver to look like a drunk driver, they're more likely to get out of the vehicle and choose a different method of transportation. This method hurts drivers who want to change and stop drinking. It also showcases that the driver's mistake of being drunk as an "unforgivable mistake", which makes a second chance harder to obtain.

1.  Some people aren't allowed to renew their passports because they are believed to not be an American citizen. Even though some people have birth certificates that say they are born in U.S, the State Department says the U.S-Mexico border has significant amounts of citizenship fraud. Some people who are thought to be born in U.S could be illegal immigrants.

2. Juan was infuriated when his passport was not renewed. He says he served his country, U.S, and fought for the U.S on the condition that he wouldn't be a suspect for being an illegal immigrant.

3. The government checks if the suspect's birth certificate if it has been filed by a midwife or a birth attendee. If the suspect does have their certificate filed by a midwife or has two certificates, then they have to show more evidence that they were born in U.S.

4.  I think the people who have a certificate that is filed by a doctor or midwife that says they are born in U.S should go and register for their U.S Citizenship, because then when the people register (again) for a citizenship, then their citizenship will be legal and they will be treated as legal immigrants. The people wouldn't have to have their citizenship questioned every time they renew their passport and it decreases the amount of illegal immigrants coming to U.S.
