Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

 1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture?

The eye (pupil).

3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field?

Smaller aperture size (f/16) results in a larger depth of field, and less background blur. Bigger aperture size (f/2) results in more background blur, and a shorter field of depth.

This photo most likely was taken with an aperture setting of F2.8, because the background is very blurred, creating a short depth of field.



This photo most likely was taken with an aperture setting of F16, because both the background and foreground are very sharp. You can clearly see the mountains in the back, as well as the plants in the front. 


Shutter Speed---------------






This photo was taken with a slow shutter speed, because the wind turbine's propellers look as if they're in motion and are blurred (motion blur).




This photo was taken with a fast shutter speed. Everything is sharp not blurred, and the image "freezes" the water splash in its position.

At the beginning while the sun was still up and the courtyard had reasonable good light

ISO 200 was most likely used. The brightness is not very high, so the picture is dark, but has less noise.

Possible ISO 1600. Image is brightened enough where the building can be seen in night.



ISO 3200 on the right. Notice how "grainy" the image is compared to ISO 100, due to increasing brightness at an already mid-bright scene.

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
Photo will not be so dark, you will be able to see the event better.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
Try to use it more if scene is not severely dark.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?
Don't use it so often, unless it is needed.

Self Portrait and Portraits Intro

Tips:

• Get closer to the subject (close up)
• Choose a minimalistic background (or one that makes person stand out)
• Rule of Thirds (give subject space to look at) or don't (subject is dead center or close to edge)

Environmental Pictures:

I like this environmental portrait, because the subject is in the center of the photo, which directs my attention towards him. The photo also creates depth in the photo, which brings attention to the subjects workspace (environment).

This is also a good environmental portrait. The light illuminating the subjects face, as well as the sharp focus makes the subject's head and hands pop out more, which shows that the subject works with his hands. The light also illuminates the subjects workspace, which acts as a spotlight for both the subject and environment.

Photography Self Portrait 

This self portrait expresses the attitude of the subject in the photo. The black and white colors followed by the serious face shows seriousness in the photo.

This self portrait is also good. The very black background gives attention to the subject. Black and white with the concerned (or relieved) face gives viewers a sense of attitude or situation that is happening in the photo.

Casual Portrait:



This image is a good casual portrait. The subject's smile as well as the leaning pose generates the sense of relaxation or content-ness in the photo.



This is also a good casual portrait. The subject is looking off at the camera, giving viewers an interest in what he's looking at (directing more attention in the facial area). The red background makes the blue suit pop out more, which brings more attention toward the subject.


I will be taking pictures of myself and my brother. If taking the equipment out of school is not allowed, then I'll switch to taking a picture of a classmate, such as Emilio or someone else (with their consent of course).  For my brother, the living room would most likely be suitable, as it is where he plays the most. For a self portrait, I could take myself in my room. My room has some young photos of me, which can act as props, and doesn't have distracting background. All portraits will most likely be indoors, because that represents the idea that my brother and me are not often outdoors (for entertainment). If outdoors, there is a local park nearby, which is usually vacant. To make portraits successful, I can always move my brother to various locations, and taking a picture of my self will only require a timer on my camera (or a mirror). Close ups and the Rule of Thirds should help emphasize the photo.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A:

Even though the manipulation of photos may aid in increase sales/revenue, it is important for all photojournalists to show the photo as it is.

Photos are used in media to support a story's validity as well as the story itself.

Pictures that are distorted can alter the public's opinion upon the story, resulting in bias.

This is considered unethical, as the public should determine their stance on the topic, not be influenced by a photo with a distortion that depicts a certain feeling.

If the public finds out that an image is distorted, the photo damages the company's sales, and/or their reputation.


B:

Washington Post and New York Times have a strict philosophy on image manipulation. They provide photographers guidelines on how to manipulate their photographs without breaching the ethics of photo manipulation.

C:

I feel that if a photo is going to be used in a story, cropping out certain images, or inserting images is unethical. The photo is not trustworthy anymore because it shows a scene that never actually happened in real life. If it's color alterations or adjusting how dark a photo is, then it is okay as long as it is meant to improve the photo's visibility.


D:



This is probably the most unethical photo I've found. The image on the left is the distorted image. The distorted image has been distorted to make the person (OJ Simpson) appear more menacing. This gives off bias.


E:

This is the least unethical image. The pyramid was "squished" due to the magazine being in vertical format. The distortion does not emit any bias toward an event or story.

Depth

This image has depth, as the foreground is the people such as the priest and medical people, the mid-ground being the people standing, and the background being the building and sky. The buildings on the left make a diagonal line towards the sky, which emphasized more depth into the photo.






*note to self: images that have more focus on the foreground, mid ground, or background do not show depth. Depth must have all of the following in focus.

Cropping

This image shows cropping because the objects in the back of the Empire State building are blurred out. This brings focus to the Empire State building, and doesn't allow the smaller buildings on the ground to distract in the background.

Viewpoint

This image shows a viewpoint taken from the ground level. The viewpoint makes the people and buildings in the scene taller. Because the people are under shade, the building is more emphasized in the photo. The people under shade plus the ground level viewpoint makes the building taller, making focus of the photo, the building, more eye-catching.
