Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A:

Even though the manipulation of photos may aid in increase sales/revenue, it is important for all photojournalists to show the photo as it is.

Photos are used in media to support a story's validity as well as the story itself.

Pictures that are distorted can alter the public's opinion upon the story, resulting in bias.

This is considered unethical, as the public should determine their stance on the topic, not be influenced by a photo with a distortion that depicts a certain feeling.

If the public finds out that an image is distorted, the photo damages the company's sales, and/or their reputation.


B:

Washington Post and New York Times have a strict philosophy on image manipulation. They provide photographers guidelines on how to manipulate their photographs without breaching the ethics of photo manipulation.

C:

I feel that if a photo is going to be used in a story, cropping out certain images, or inserting images is unethical. The photo is not trustworthy anymore because it shows a scene that never actually happened in real life. If it's color alterations or adjusting how dark a photo is, then it is okay as long as it is meant to improve the photo's visibility.


D:



This is probably the most unethical photo I've found. The image on the left is the distorted image. The distorted image has been distorted to make the person (OJ Simpson) appear more menacing. This gives off bias.


E:

This is the least unethical image. The pyramid was "squished" due to the magazine being in vertical format. The distortion does not emit any bias toward an event or story.

Depth

This image has depth, as the foreground is the people such as the priest and medical people, the mid-ground being the people standing, and the background being the building and sky. The buildings on the left make a diagonal line towards the sky, which emphasized more depth into the photo.






*note to self: images that have more focus on the foreground, mid ground, or background do not show depth. Depth must have all of the following in focus.

Cropping

This image shows cropping because the objects in the back of the Empire State building are blurred out. This brings focus to the Empire State building, and doesn't allow the smaller buildings on the ground to distract in the background.

Viewpoint

This image shows a viewpoint taken from the ground level. The viewpoint makes the people and buildings in the scene taller. Because the people are under shade, the building is more emphasized in the photo. The people under shade plus the ground level viewpoint makes the building taller, making focus of the photo, the building, more eye-catching.

Symmetry and Patterns

The twin towers are shown in this photo to look exactly symmetrical to each other. Using the smoke and explosion to break the symmetry brings the focal point in the scene towards the smoke (and the explosion). This brings more attention towards the smoke and explosion, making the scene very eye-catching.

Three Favorite Pictures In 2018


A lava flow from the eruption of the Kilauea volcano, which destroyed more than 700 homes.

I like the different textures between the lava and the grassy terrain. It is very detailed, and shows how easily the lava destroyed the trees and grass beneath it.



 Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is surrounded by photographers in this photo, and is in court because of the Facebook issue in 2018. Each photographer's face can be seen trying to take Zuckerberg's face.

This is a picture of fog over skyscrapers on the waterfront in Qingdao. The picture is very detailed when viewed on NBC's picture slideshow.

This is the best song because I remember all my friends repeating many lyrics from the song after its release. The song became popular during early 2018.


Best Movie 2018

 
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse:

I thought this was going to be very boring, but it was actually a good movie. The animations were very fluid and interesting, and it expressed the movie as a comic book, which was very nice. Aside from the unrealistic ending, the movie was funny and interesting.

This news story relates to the Trump administration child separation policy in 2018, which angered many people. Photo shows a 3 year old, who had an arrest warrant filed against him after he crossed the southern border with his father.

45th U.S president that has been in many political and controversial topics in 2018. News stories on Trump have been plentiful in 2018.

"How National Anthem protests took Colin Kaepernick from star QB to unemployment to a bold Nike ad" CNN:

In 2018 Colin Kaepernick appeared in a 2018 Nike ad. Kaepernick was an American football star who started the “take a knee” national anthem protest against police brutality two years ago.
His appearance in the Nike ad had some people burning Nike shoes, representing their protest against having Kaepernick in the ad.

------My Holiday------

1. What I did:

I remember I took a hike with my mother, which was literally a walk in the park, as we ended up in Dick Nichols District Park.

2. Resolutions for 2019:

No school stress in 2019.

This year, I am going to do my homework first before watching any TV in an attempt to not get stress overload.

3. Looking forward in 2019:

I am looking forward to new video games that will appear in 2019. I remember there were some games that planned to be finished in 2019 when I was very young.
